Universal Music Group has struck a multi-year licensing deal in Africa with Boomplay, an African music streaming service. UMG’s global acts such as Drake and local artists like Nigerian singer Tekno will be available to the 36 million listeners on Boomplay’s streaming platform in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.
Boomplay’s service offers some 2 million songs, spanning genres such as Afrobeat, Afropop and hip-hop. Universal is the first major music company to license its catalogue to the company.
Earlier this year, Univeral announced the launch of Universal Music Nigeria, a new division within Western Africa to provide artists with opportunities throughout the region and to provide African talent a launch pad for wider international success.
