Boomplayer, a music streaming and download service owned by Chinese Transsion Holdings has struck a deal with Universal Music Group (UMG).
Transsion Holdings produces cheap Android brands Itel, Infinix and Tecno, that are enjoying widespread success in Africa due to their affordability.
Boomplay, launched in 2015 reportedly has over 36 million users with over 10 million app downloads on Google Play store and the rest being attributed to preinstallation on Transsion phone brands . The app is a potential strong contender to iTunes and Spotify due to the difficulty of payment options in the African market. Boomplayer offers a freemium model that is supported by ads for unpaid users.
